What Traffic Control Training Course are available?
There are four Traffic Control courses that are widely available thoughtout New South Wales.
- Traffic Controller (Blue Card)
- Apply Traffic Control Plans (Yellow Card)
- Select Modify Traffic Control Plans (Red Card)
- Design & Inspect Traffic Control Plans (Orange Card)
What is the Driver Licence requirement?
All persons seeking to be trained in the RTA Traffic Controller (Blue or Grey) course are required to hold or to have held a minimum of a Provisional P2 Driver Licence (Green P’s).
Persons seeking to be trained in the RTA Traffic Controller (Blue or Grey) are required to:
- Hold or have held a NSW Provisional (P2) Driver Licence or its equivalent OR
- Hold or have held within the past two years a NSW Traffic Controller (Blue or Grey) Photo Card
Note that an equivalent Driver Licence can include:
- NSW unrestricted driver licence Class RI (rider) OR
- A licence from another Australian State or Territory that is the equivalent or better than the above mentioned P2 or R1
Persons who do not hold a current Driver Licence, but have held one on the past will need to provide proof to the Trainer before training.
Why is there a P2 Driver Licence requirement?
The policy direction is a legitimate safety control and serves as part of a suite of controls as is typical for high risk work. Experienced drivers understand vehicle momentum/ speed and should demonstrate the level of awareness necessary when working in close proximity to traffic.

What if I have an overseas Driver Licence?
The equivalent to the NSW P2 Driver Licence is that your overseas licence should be 12 months or more from date of issue to the date of training and it is not a learner’s permit.
If your licence is not written in English, provide:
Your overseas licence and an official translation from the Community Relations Commission for a multicultural NSW or Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
Note: Requests for Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) fee-free translation of personal documents from eligible persons should be lodged at Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) service provider outlets which will then despatch them to a translation service provider.

What do I do when my Traffic Control card expires?
All Traffic Control Cards are valid for 3 years from date of training. If your card has expired you will need to requalify by completing the training and assessments to receive a valid Photo Card.
What is the Grey Traffic Controller - Non Construction Photo Card?
The Grey Traffic Controller – Non Construction Photo Card is issued to those not working in the construction industry and have not meet the NSW OHS requirements for that working environment, for example parking attendants, security personnel and cycle clubs.
What should I do if I have not received my Traffic Control Card?

What is my card has been lost or stolen?
Persons who have misplaced their Traffic Control card/s can obtain a replacement from the RTA’s Traffic Control Team by following these steps:
1. Complete a Statutory Declaration (available from Australia Post), with the following details:
- your name, address and date of birth
- your card number, training date and training provider (if possible)
- the reason why you need a replacement card (what happened to the original?)
- your signature (witnessed by a Justice of the Peace)
- the Justice of the Peace’s signature and JP number.
2. Send the Statutory Declaration, with a cheque or money order for $25.00 (per card) made out to the Roads and Traffic Authority (not ‘RTA’) to:

How do I get a replacement Logbook?
If your logbook has been lost or stolen you can request a replacement in writing and enclose a cheque or money order for $5.50 (per book) made out to the Roads and Traffic Authority (not ‘RTA’) to:

If your logbook is full you can request a replacement as above or attached your own extra pages.
